the public discussion on “The Politics of Free Culture.”

Workshop:: Audio/Visual Archives, Access and Re-use: The Dutch experience and Austrian perspectives

Public archives are managing, in the public interest, vast increasingly digitized collections of cultural heritage. Yet, the public interest is changing in the context of networked access and new practices regarding the use of cultural goods.

Place: Depot, Wien Breitegasse 3, 1070 Vienna

In this workshop, we want to look at the examples of the transformation of Dutch audiovisual archives and debate what Austrian institutions can learn from this. We want to explore what role public archives can play in relation to diverse new practices of cultural production.

The workshop will consist of input by Eric Kluitenberg (economies of the commons, NL) dutch media theorist working on the concept of the commons in relation to the publicly funded memory institutions and Paul Keller (Kennisland, NL) who has been advising Dutch (the institute for Sound and Vision) and European (Europeana) memory institutions on open content and open data policies.

This input sets the background for a discussion of Austrian archives and their potential to support new practices of access and production that are emerging in the networked culture.
The workshop will be held in English and German.

Die urheberrechtsbasierten Verwertungsmodelle künstlerischer Produktion sind in einer Krise. Konzepte der traditionellen Kulturindustrie können dem wenig entgegensetzen. Gleichzeitig gibt es eine Vielzahl neuer Modelle digitaler Vernetzung von Kunst und Kultur. Anhand konkreter Beispiele soll die neue Landschaft digitaler kultureller Praxis erkundet werden, um Möglichkeiten und Gefahren auszumachen.
